The basics

How iPhone EMI works in India

When you buy an iPhone on EMI, the price (minus any down payment and exchange value) is split into equal monthly payments over your chosen tenure - usually 3 to 24 months.

Every EMI has two parts: principal (the actual phone cost) and interest (the cost of borrowing). Indian banks use the reducing-balance method, so interest is charged only on the amount you still owe, not on the original price.

The formula

EMI = [ P × R × (1+R)N ] ÷ [ (1+R)N − 1 ]

P = loan amount · R = monthly interest rate (annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100) · N = number of months. The calculator above does this for you and adds processing fee and 18% GST so the total is realistic.

Credit-card EMI is usually the cheapest standard option if you already hold a card with enough limit. Consumer-durable loans (Bajaj, HDB, TVS) are quicker to get but cost more. Rates below are typical ranges - always confirm the live offer at checkout.

Financing optionTypical rate (p.a.)Best for
No-Cost EMI (festive offers)0% + feesShort 3–6 month tenures
HDFC / ICICI credit card~13%Lowest standard cost
SBI / Axis / Kotak credit card~15%Existing cardholders
Bajaj Finserv / HDB / TVS loan16–24%No credit card needed
Personal loan (IDFC, etc.)~11–18%Long tenures, no card

A processing fee (₹199–₹499 or ~2% of the loan) plus 18% GST applies on almost every option, including no-cost EMI.

Is "no-cost EMI" actually free?

Mostly no. Under no-cost EMI the interest is paid by the seller or given back as cashback - but three costs usually remain:

1. Processing fee + GST

Lenders charge an upfront processing fee (Bajaj is often ₹499; banks charge ~2% of the loan) and 18% GST on it. That's real money out of your pocket on day one.

2. The lost instant discount

Amazon, Flipkart and stores often remove the upfront discount when you pick EMI instead of paying in full. Losing a ₹4,000–₹6,000 discount can quietly make a "0%" offer cost more than a 14% loan.

3. GST on notional interest

On some no-cost schemes GST is still charged on the interest amount the bank would have earned. Enter your fees and lost discount in the calculator to see the true effective rate.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How is iPhone EMI calculated in India?

Banks use the reducing-balance formula EMI = [P × R × (1+R)^N] / [(1+R)^N − 1], where P is the loan (iPhone price minus down payment and exchange), R is the monthly rate (annual ÷ 12), and N is the tenure in months. Interest applies only to the outstanding balance each month.

Is no-cost EMI really free on iPhone?

Not fully. You still pay a processing fee, 18% GST on it, and you often lose the instant discount you'd get on full payment. Use the calculator's "instant discount lost" field to reveal the true cost.

Which bank has the lowest iPhone EMI interest rate?

Among standard options, HDFC and ICICI credit card EMI are usually cheapest at about 13% p.a. SBI, Axis and Kotak are around 15%, while Bajaj Finserv consumer loans run 16–24% p.a.

What tenure should I choose?

Shorter tenures (3, 6, 12 months) cost far less total interest but have higher monthly payments. No-cost EMI is usually offered only up to 6–9 months. Longer tenures lower the monthly amount but raise total interest.

Can I buy an iPhone on EMI without a credit card?

Yes - through consumer-durable loans (Bajaj Finserv, HDB, TVS Credit), debit-card EMI on eligible banks, BNPL, or a personal loan from lenders like IDFC FIRST Bank.
